Charles M. Downing, age 85, of Wexford, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011, in North Hills Health and Rehabilitation. Born March 20, 1926, in Evans City, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Bess S. Mettler Downing.
Mr. Downing was of the Protestant faith. He retired from Chrysler Motor Corporation with 30 years of service. After retirement, he drove school buses for the Pine Richland and Seneca Valley School Districts.
He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving in WWII, as Seaman 2nd Class. Mr. Downing was a member of American Legion Post 219 of Evans City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Kern Downing, in 2002, and a son John. He had his pilot license and was a former member of the Condor Aero Club of Zelienople.
He is survived by one daughter, Linda Downing of Wexford; one son, Thomas (Maureen) Downing of Mechanicsburg; one brother, Leland H. Downing of Florida; one sister, Jane Jennings of New York, and two grandchildren.
Relatives and friends of Charles M. Downing, who died on Thursday, April 21, 2011, will be received at the A. Carl Kinsey-Ronald N. Volz Funeral Home Inc., 328 West Main Street, Evans City, PA 16033, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011. Services will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial in Pinewood Memorial Park, Cranberry Twp.
